St Gervais, Le Fayet and Megeveare superbly situated 50 minutes drive from Geneva and just a few miles from Chamonix. These traditional villages are some of the most delightful in the Mont Blanc area with many bars, shops and restaurants.
Generally considered to be the greatest and most spectacular ski area in the world, the Chamonix valley together with St Gervais/Megève is also the most varied and scenic, with Mont Blanc, Europe’s highest mountain as a constant back-drop.
The majestic Mont Blanc Massif with its glaciers and forested slopes combines to provide extensive skiing for all abilities.
As a spa resort, St Gervais has attracted tourists since 1806 and today is popular with families wanting a cheaper alternative to Megeve. Spa treatments are available in the hot springs. Nearby Le Bettex at 1,400m is a quieter village with a few comfortable hotels and some cross-country skiing.
The main ski area of St Gervais has 79 lifts on the slopes of Mont d’Arbois, and is linked with that of Megeve. It has a terrain park with a half-pipe and is accessed by a fast, 20-person gondola from the edge of the resort to Le Bettex. The second stage goes up to St Gervais 1850. This is a popular and often-crowded entrance to Megève’s pistes. Skiing on the Mont Blanc side of St-Gervais is served by the Tramway, a mountain railway that climbs slowly to the Col de Voza at 1,653m, where it links to the skiing above Les Houches. Hotel-Restaurant Igloo and the Terminus in Le Fayet area have good reputations for their cuisine.
St Gervais has three nursery-slope lifts and two kindergartens. The ESF at St Gervais and St Nicholas, and the ESI at Le Bettex, all offer standard lessons, as well as cross-country, slalom and telemark. The two local mountain-guiding companies are Compagnie des Guides de St Gervais and Guides des Cimes, and both can organise heli-skiing.
Apres-Ski:
St-Gervais has a moderate range of restaurants, with Quatre Epices and L’Eterle both good value. Le Four and Le Robinson serve a variety of local specialities, while La Tanière and La Chalette are traditional. La Nuit des Temps is the only disco and the town has a casino.
