The village of Maria Alm is surely one of prettiest in Austria, reminiscent of a winter fairytale with its picturesque streets, timbered houses and gentle little river meandering through the centre.
Maria Alm is one of three resorts that make up the Hochkönig Ski Circuit with over 150 kms of piste. Located less than one hour's drive from the historical city of Salzburg, it’s a typically picture postcard Austrian resort with great skiing areas for all standards of skier.
Despite the vast ski area, immaculate slopes and enviable snow record, the Hochkönig Winter Kingdom is still largely unknown to the British market. For the few keen British skiers that have discovered this incredibly beautiful area with it’s quiet pistes and short lift queues there's no turning back.
The Hochkönig ski area has 150 kilometres superbly groomed slopes stretching from Maria Alm in the West to Mühlbach in the East. State-of-the-art lifts and captivating powder snow provide all the variety you could hope for. Zell am See and the glacier at Kaprun are around 15 kms away, and you can also ski the Saalbach - Hinterglemm Ciruit accessing from Leogang which is approx 8kms away, so the opportunities for new challenges are never far away.
The Hochkönig ski area also forms part of the immense Ski Amadé alliance allowing winter sports enthusiasts access to 276 lifts and 865kms of superbly groomed slopes - all under one skipass!
Chalet guests like to warm up on the doorstep slopes in Maria Alm served by 3 lifts, including a high speed gondola to the Natrun. This interlinks down into the valley to the Aberg-Langeck ski area on the other side, offering a huge variety of pistes suitable for all abilities. The gentle blue runs from the middle station of Abergbahn allow beginners to ease themselves into their ski experience. Bold tree lined runs from the summit at 2000m are designed to provide the right amount of exhilaration for advanced skiers. Intermediates have a massive choice of cruising reds, ski tours and glorious long runs throughout the Ski Circuit. From the Aberg summit, at 2000m, it's a long enjoyable cruise down to Hintermoos. From there, a regular ski bus service link to Hintertal to where skiers will take the Three Valley connection to Dienten and onwards to the resort of Mühlbach. Snowboarders enjoy the fun parks in Maria Alm, Hinterreit and Aberg.
Apres-Ski:
After a day filled with unparalleled fun on the slopes, what other choice could there possibly be? It's time for Après Ski! If you enough energy left over after all that skiing, there is a variety-packed program of evening events in store.
In countless pubs and dance bars, party animals can enjoy a great "knees-up" and strike up new friendships.
But if you prefer to wind down your day in a more relaxed setting, you will find plenty of places, including mountain inns, where you can savour the warm, intimate atmosphere away from the party crowd.
Maria Alm itself is a small village with typical bars and cafes as well as a disco. Other possibilities for evening activities for ski and snowboarding tours include torchlit walks, swimming and bowling in Maria Alm and ice skating in nearby Bischofshofen.
There is a fantastic choice of mountain restaurants, large and small, all of them traditional in style with terrific food served by friendly Austrian staff.
