Improving our lifestyle and fitness levels is very much at the front of everyone\u2019s minds at the moment, and a very fashionable topic in the media. There are currently lots of campaigns across the UK promoting women in sport, both recreationally and at national levels \u2013 a trend which has very much snowballed since the London 2012 Olympics.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

As International Women\u2019s Day<\/a> promotes gender equality once again, sadly there are still noticeable gender divides in many sports \u2013 and skiing is no exception to that. Whilst there are physical reasons why some women struggle to reach the highest level in sports, there are also many other factors, including social and psychological barriers, that stop women getting to the top.<\/p>\n

\"Emma<\/a>\u00a0\u00a0\"Emma<\/a><\/p>\n

Emma Cairns<\/a>, a ski instructor in Verbier, Switzerland<\/a>, is proudly a great example of a woman who has made it to the top of her career in the ski industry. Emma started skiing in Glenshee at 3 years old, and later going on to join the race club, braving the extreme Scottish weather. Once a chalet girl in Courchevel<\/a>, today she\u2019s a fully qualified ski instructor who has a new ski school \u2013 Element Concept<\/a>, in Verbier \u2013 and is also a BASI Trainer<\/a> (an examiner in the British ski teaching system).<\/p>\n

Throughout Emma\u2019s journey, and the years of undertaking skiing exams, she has contemplated the glaring gender divide in the industry surrounding the numbers of girls who ski. The statistics are quite startling. For example, of nearly 400 ski teachers with the highest British qualification (BASI Level 4) only 60 are women. In the last four years roughly the same percentage of men and women pass their final technical exam, but last season 80% of entrants were male.<\/p>\n

Fewer women are attracted to ski teaching exams, but fundamentally fewer women are attracted to skiing. A 2013 UK study found only 38% of skiers were women. Around 40% seems to be a consistent industry average \u2013 despite the fact that 52% of the EU is female. Well, it\u2019s hard to be certain but it seems that women simply don\u2019t ski as much as men, or join the profession in the same numbers.<\/p>\n

Emma has a theory on why this divide exists in the skiing world:<\/p>\n

\u201cWe know that more men become instructors, and it could partly be because of the status that comes with passing the competitive technical exams. Women can be put off by that macho mentality, but also\u00a0aren’t\u00a0motivated and wired that way.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cI think there is a different psychological incentive for women \u2013 we get into ski teaching for the challenge of teaching skiing and to improve. Not because we\u2019re wired to compete with our peers in the same way as men.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

\"Emma<\/a>\u201cThat difference in psychological approach is quite often very clear in the groups I coach \u2013 there\u00a0isn’t\u00a0always much technical difference between genders, but the\u00a0motivational and psychological factors are very different.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Looking at other women who have progressed through the system, Emma thinks the things that set them apart are their confidence, mental strength and sheer determination. But you don\u2019t have to be born that way. Emma firmly believes that female skiers can develop and build that confidence and belief if they\u2019re taught in the correct environment, with the right psychological and technical coaching techniques.<\/p>\n

\u201cBy tailoring how we teach women we can encourage more of them into the sport \u2013 that will lead to more women enjoying skiing, achieving more goals and I hope more women believing they can become ski instructors.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Emma is running Women’s Ski Camps in Verbier<\/a> this season, not only to improve female skiers\u2019 technical performance, but also to discover off-piste skiing in a secure and relaxed environment.<\/p>\n

\u201cBy skiing in women-only groups we can learn together, deal with the positive and negative psychological influences at our own pace, focus on female\u00a0bio-mechanics\u00a0and take our\u00a0skiing to the next level. Skiing like a girl should be a compliment!\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Element Ski School is running a Women\u2019s Performance Camp on 14th \u2013 18th March<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The camp will focus on piste performance, bumps and off-piste techniques. There will be two groups running on the camp, one intermediate and the other advanced. Women must be able to ski red runs on piste for the intermediate group.<\/p>\n
