The resort of Alpe d'Huez is set on a high, sunny plateau at 1,850m, in the Grande Rousses area of the Southern Alps. Alpe d'Huez is renowned for its sunshine record, it has an excellent lift system with extensive skiing for all abilities. Alpe d'Huez boasts great snow conditions due to its altitude and it is capped with a glacier that is home to some long black runs that make their way back to the resort. The Alpe d'Huez ski terrain is deceptively steep in parts yet there are extensive, gentle nursery slopes next to the resort.
High Altitude Skiing in Alpe d'Huez
Take the Pic Blanc cable car up to 3,300m and you can ski for nearly an hour and a half without having to dig out your lift pass again. Alpe d'Huez has got it all, from some of the best beginner slopes in France to some of the most challenging blacks in the Alps. For a combination of the two, head for the longest black run in the Alps, the Sarenne, which stretches for 16km from the top of the glacier and changes gradient from nearly vertical to virtually horizontal during the 2000m descent. It is a run that can be tackled by any competent intermediate and is well worth the trek up as it is without doubt one of the most beautiful and memorable runs in the Alps.
