With vast ski areas, quiet slopes, and a rich heritage, choose a luxury ski chalet on the Sellaronda for a unique ski holiday unlike anywhere else in Europe. The Sellaronda ski circuit can be discovered in the very heart of the Dolomites. Connecting four different ski areas around the impressive Sella Massif, the 40km Sellaronda loop provides access to roughly 500km of interconnected ski slopes. The area is home to simply breathtaking mountain views, with striking mountain faces and jagged peaks surrounding the glorious ski slopes in all directions. Dotted around the four ski areas are peaceful villages rich in Ladin culture, where tradition and heritage go hand in hand with hidden gems of undiscovered luxury. Luxury ski holidays to the Sellaronda are perfect for those wishing to escape the crowds and experience an authentic mountain way of life.
The largest and most prestigious ski area to be explored on your luxury Sellaronda ski holiday is Val Gardena. Encompassing three villages and 181km of slopes, you will find some of the most luxurious Sellaronda ski chalets here, with offerings in the stylish villages of Selva Val Gardena and Santa Cristina. Ortisei luxury chalets are similarly sumptuous accommodation on the Sellaronda, while having better access to the family-friendly skiing of the Alpe di Siusi side of the Val Gardena ski area. Luxury ski chalets in Alta Badia range from romantic getaways to private alpine retreats on the Sellaronda. Lastly, the Val di Fassa and Arabba-Marmolada ski areas are home to the peaceful ski village of Canazei and charming resort of Arabba. Offering genuine hospitality for your Sellaronda ski holiday, these resorts still provide great access to the ski circuit. Additionally, Arabba-Marmolada has the highest mountain in the Dolomites, a hidden gem with some of the best skiing on the Sellaronda!
Luxury chalets in the Sellaronda region are growing in popularity. There are luxury ski in ski out chalets, providing direct access to the two routes of the circuit or dotted alongside world-class ski slopes. Sellaronda catered chalets give you a chance to experience gourmet Italian cuisine and incredible service without having to lift a finger. Alternatively, you might choose self catered accommodation in the Sellaronda ski resorts, allowing you to indulge in a taste of delicious, authentic local dishes.
The rental accommodation in the region often comes equipped with a sparkling selection of facilities, including luxury chalets with swimming pools and hot tubs, that make the most of the magnificent mountain vistas. Sellaronda apartment rentals provide a more intimate ski holiday experience, whilst private, secluded luxury chalets on the Sellaronda are perfect for big group ski holidays to this incredible region of the Dolomites.
The Dolomites are a mountain range and UNESCO World Heritage site crossing a handful of Italy's North Eastern regions, in the Italian Alps. The Dolomites are so named for the rock that makes up their geological composition. They stand out for their pale colour and sheer cliffs, resulting in majestic panoramas. A key area to enjoy this natural beauty is around the Sellaronda Ski Circuit which straddles the regions of Trentino, South Tyrol, and Belluno (in Veneto). The Sellaronda Ski Circuit gives you access between the ski areas of Alta Badia, Arabba-Marmolada, Val Di Fassa, Val Gardena, and their respective villages, allowing visitors to experience a variety of Italy's best ski destinations. Various international airports service the Sellaronda resorts including Verona, Venice, and Innsbruck.
The ski areas around the Sellaronda Ski Circuit are just a handful that form part of the wider Dolomiti Superski region boasting over 1,200km of pistes. With such a vast ski region, there are plenty of slopes for all ski abilities, while a consistently good snow record guarantees a successful luxury ski holiday in the Dolomites throughout the season.
Which direction should you ski the Sella Ronda?
Both. The circuit is signposted in two directions, orange running clockwise and green running anticlockwise, and each takes in the same four passes in reverse order. Green is generally reckoned the slightly gentler introduction, orange the more interesting ski. Locals will tell you the light is better one way in the morning and the other way in the afternoon, which is as good a reason as any to do both across a week.
How long does the Sella Ronda circuit take?
Allow five to six hours at a comfortable pace with a proper lunch, or around four if you are quick and lucky with lift queues. The 40km total is roughly 26km of skiing and the rest lifts. Start by 10am at the latest; the circuit closes progressively from mid afternoon and being stranded on the wrong side of a pass means a taxi.
Is one lift pass valid for the whole Sella Ronda?
Yes. The Dolomiti Superski pass covers the entire circuit and the four ski areas it connects, along with eight more areas beyond them. Single area passes will not get you round the loop.
Which Sella Ronda resort has the best luxury chalets?
Selva Val Gardena and Alta Badia hold the greatest choice, both with lift access straight onto the circuit. Ortisei offers the most elegant village setting, Arabba the best snow record, and Canazei a lively Trentino base. See the resort notes above for how each valley differs.
Where can I see a Sella Ronda map?
The official piste map is published each season by Dolomiti Superski and the four ski areas, and every lift station on the circuit displays it. The route is colour coded on the mountain, orange for clockwise and green for anticlockwise, so once you are on it the signage does the work. Our Ski Specialists can talk you through the circuit and which village puts you nearest the start of it.
Can I ski the Sella Ronda as a beginner?
The circuit itself is mostly blue and easy red, so a confident intermediate will manage comfortably, but it is a long day and a few short pitches are steeper than the grading suggests. First timers are better off building up on the local slopes of Val Gardena or Alta Badia and saving the loop for a later trip.
