Located at 1007 metres above sea level in the Pays d'Enhaut valley, the luxury ski resort of Rougemont was once a traditional Swiss village found halfway between Château- d'Oex and the luxury well known resort of Gstaad. Named after the red rocks nearby, the village itself has been built around a Romanesque Protestant church dating back to the 11th Century and also Rougemont Castle dating back to the 16th Century. After the railway line opened in 1905, the Rougemont luxury hotel tourism industry began to thrive.

The resort is now known for its beautiful gardens and enchanting forests, lying between meadows and fields. All buildings are south facing and many of the wooden chalets are centuries old having been created from the original dairy and agricultural buildings. Rougemont is a stop along the Golden Pass line, an iconic railway running from Montreux to Interlaken and Lucerne still to this day.

Rougemont ski region links to the well-known neighbouring resort of Gstaad via the Vidamanette cable car. There is 50 kilometres of ski runs from Rougemont via Saanen to Gstaad and it also links to Chateaud'Oex in the La Braye ski region. Gstaad - Saanen - Rougemont is a sizeable ski domain with 53 lifts and cable cars, 220km of piste overall offering skiers an incredible 1336 metres (4382 feet) of vertical descent and 90 kilometres (56 miles) of pistes.

Rougemont and Gstaad ski areas are mainly characterised by their gentle slopes and a more leisurely pace which are perfect for all skiing abilities, La Videmanette is great for intermediate and expert skiers offering the ultimate adrenaline rush with its challenging runs around the limestone pillar of "Le Rubli". The longest downhill run (10 km) is from Gstaad to Rougemont with a height difference of 1,200 metres.

The high plateau of Les Mosses – La Lécherette is popular with cross-country skiers, with the resort offering 40 kilometres (25 miles) of tracks leading through snow-covered fields and forests. Other non-skiing activities include toboggan runs, snow-shoe treks, paragliding and winter walking trails. Thanks to its favourable micro-climate, neighbouring Château-d'Oex has also developed into a hot-air ballooning metropolis. Luxury ski resort Gstaad's main street, Hauptstrasse, is also a favourite day trip for those who enjoy shopping.

Apres Ski

When it comes to Rougemont après, it has a typically more quiet and laid back vibe. The Hotel De Rougemont welcomes visitors to take a drink in the sociable bar and outside terrace area perfect for socialising after a day on the slopes. There are only seven restaurants in Rougemont itself including restaurant du Cerf which is a traditional Swiss tavern famed for its raclette and fondue and also Le Braconnier, an authentic Italian restaurant offering the best Vittelo Tonnato to be found anywhere in the Alps apparently.

Neighbouring Gstaad has a good mixture of stylish bars with live music, trendy clubs and lounges to spend lazy afternoons in. You can find fabulous cocktails in Gstaad Palace, the Alpina Bar & Lounge or the Barni-Bar in Hotel Gstaaderhof. For live music head to Bouquet in La Grand Bellevue, Piano Bar or Jam Pub which is also known for its great burgers. If late night eating is for you, Sammy's Gastro Bar serves food until 2am!
