It’s hard to describe such a unique chalet as Cabane Tortin without visiting in person. Such miraculous views are hard to replicate unless you have the vantage point of this 3,000m glacial refuge. From out of the window, the mountaintops and sky merge into one endless horizon; the chalet feels both remote and deeply comforting. More than just a place to rest, Cabane Tortin offers warmth and intimacy beyond a typical alpine chalet, complete with the luxury of a sauna and a private in-house chef.
Whether you arrive for the skiing, the solitude, or simply the scenery, Cabane Tortin delivers. One of our team members was lucky enough to visit in person to get a true feel for this unique chalet in the Swiss Alps, perched above Verbier and Nendaz. Read on to see what this incredible luxury alpine retreat has to offer…
From Resort…

While we wish we could say that this futuristic home in the Swiss Alps was privy to teleportation powers, alas, they must wait a few years to get their hands on that technology. In the meantime, you can savour a far more scenic journey from Verbier to Cabane Tortin. And you certainly don’t want to miss seeing the village….
Verbier is as cosmopolitan as a ski resort can feel without finding itself rebranded as a town. The village atmosphere is very much alive, and an arrival tipple of champagne at the chic Le Terasse Blonde was the perfect bridge between the old world and the new: tradition and modernity epitomised in a champagne coupé. In early December, there was a feeling of change in the air, as renovations for the winter season began. No transformation is in betrayal of the roots of the town, keeping up with Father Time whilst framing the advancements within a classic alpine lens. The restaurants in Verbier line the streets, glowing from the inside out, with delicious smells filling the air to tempt passersby. The boutique shops call you in; from Zero to Moncler, shopping is the perfect activity to set the tone for your luxury ski holiday in Switzerland.
But how to get from Verbier’s stunning mountain town to the impressive 3,000m location in Nendaz of Cabane Tortin? If you’re looking for something extra special, you can always arrive via helicopter for the most unimaginable views above the clouds! If not, then like most ski journeys, you begin at the lift stations. And don’t worry, your luggage will all be taken care of by the concierge team, so there’s no extra weight to tie you down.
Via Mont Fort
Starting with the Medran lift from the centre of Verbier, a series of efficient lifts will transport you to the very top of the ski area at Mont Fort, standing at 3,300m above sea level. Once you’ve taken in the view, there begins the short but challenging descent down the black run, followed by a short traverse onto the track that leads to the Cabane. This option is for advanced skiers due to the tricky glacial terrain at such a height!
Via Can-Am Vehicle
Rather than taking the lift network all the way to the top of Mont Fort, guests can also choose to take a tracked snow vehicle, the Can-Am, from the Col des Gentianes. This vehicle navigates the snow with ease and takes you right to the front door of the property. Alternatively, you can choose to take the vehicle partway and either snowshoe or take part in some ski touring for the final stretch. This is a great opportunity to sample both, especially for first-timers!
… to Refuge

The first traverse is the moment you realise just how unique Cabane Tortin’s location really is; with its towering presence, once a beacon of safety for weary travellers in storms, it welcomes you to warm up in a luxurious cocoon. But you could be tempted to simply lounge on the terrace and take in the view with a delicate spritz in hand, lovingly prepared by your hostess to welcome you! Surrounded by the Swiss Alps, views reaching as far as France, the vistas enveloping Cabane Tortin are simply mesmerising. There can be no doubt that it’s among our best luxury alpine retreats.
Upon stepping inside, you are greeted by the boot room. Often a humble space, Cabane Tortin refutes this by making its luxury status known right away. The boot room is stylish, ergonomic, and welcoming, complete with an entire closet of Crocs to slide tired feet into.
The Living Spaces

Though of course, the main event still awaits. Through the boot room you’ll find the open-plan living, dining and kitchen area, each segmented naturally within the space and offering ample comforts. The floor-to-ceiling windows ensure that you don’t miss out on the mountain views for even a second! While you look out at the blue skies and mountaintops, or the nighttime stargazing spectacle, behind you is the stylish kitchen area. Here, your private chef will make your luxury catered chalet experience even more magical. While you lounge, your hostess would be happy to bring you a warming alpine tea, a delicious cocktail, or any beverage of your choice to go alongside your evening canapés and views from this luxury alpine retreat.
The Sleeping Spaces

In total, Cabane Tortin hosts 4 bedrooms for up to 12 guests. The master bedroom especially is a real treat. Just off from the main living area, the space has been optimised for a unique luxury mountain home experience. The bed itself benefits from the same gorgeous views as the living area and can be moved forward with ease to get a closer look. Alternatively, it can be moved backwards and closed off to create a more private space, with the en-suite just to the side.
There are 2 additional double bedrooms on this level, each with a calming alpine aesthetic. These rooms are thoughtfully furnished to balance simplicity with practicality, making them equally suited to couples or individual guests seeking a peaceful retreat after skiing in Verbier. The top floor is dedicated to a distinctive dormitory-style sleeping area, featuring 3 sets of double twin beds. Each is set within its own enclosed pod, complete with privacy curtains, allowing guests to enjoy a more personal and cocooned sleeping environment despite the shared setting. This setup is ideal for group ski holidays with families or friends travelling together.
Dining at Altitude at a Luxury Alpine Retreat

They say that food tastes different at altitude. At Cabane Tortin, we can say with certainty that it’s elevated in more ways than one. During our visit, guests were afforded the pleasure of Chef Marius Gedminas’ cooking. His Michelin-level skill and deep understanding of local ingredients and their harmony with one another are beyond impressive. Additionally, his creative flair takes a simple ingredient, such as the humble carrot, and transforms it like magic, as seen in the dish below.

Each plate is not only delectable but also presented with care and thought. A feast for the eyes as much as for the stomach! Chef Marius also gave us a rundown of each dish as well as the considered wine pairings that refreshed the senses. The star power of his meals was elevated further by the dutiful care and attentiveness of Cabane Tortin’s hostess. She remained on hand for any task to make the stay smoother and more comfortable. Delicate table decor, managing all ambiance from music to lighting, making welcome cocktails, providing alpine tea by the flask… any whim was satisfied with easy haste.
Eco Living Among the Mountain’s Peaks

Such a privileged position on the mountain comes with a level of responsibility for the surrounding millennia-old glacier. This is not taken lightly at Cabane Tortin, with plenty of measures in place to ensure an eco-friendly mountain home. The aim is, of course, to deliver an authentic yet uncompromisingly luxurious Cabane experience, but with sustainability at the heart. Off-grid power, source water capture, and low-impact materials prove that high comfort need not cost the planet, marking it as one of the best eco luxury alpine retreats.
Cabane Tortin operates like its own self-contained ecosystem. The robust off-grid setup includes a high-capacity 99kW battery bank, supported by generator backup to ensure reliability even during prolonged adverse weather. Connectivity is maintained via a Starlink installed on the roof to allow guests to remain linked to the outside world without compromising the remote experience. Water is sourced directly from glacial melt, then meticulously filtered and purified using UV treatment to meet high safety standards.
Construction itself reflects the same philosophy: everything, from Italian oak finishes to structural components, was airlifted in by helicopter to avoid disturbing the terrain. Engineered to endure winds of up to 150 km/h and withstand snow loads of up to 4 metres concurrently, the cabin is undeniably resilient. Small but meaningful choices, like avoiding harsh chemicals such as bleach, further reduce environmental impact, ensuring that the surrounding biome remains as untouched as possible.
