A family of four skiing on the Seiser Alm on a ski holiday in the Dolomites.

The Dolomites are a majestic mountain range in the Italian Alps. Rich in heritage and culture, the region is dotted with historic and charming villages that offer exceptional luxury ski holidays in the winter months. These resorts offer a different experience to other purpose-built, busy alpine resorts in places like France and Switzerland. Ski holidays in the Dolomites offer a chance to reconnect with nature in a quieter environment.

The majority of ski resorts in the Dolomites fall under the Dolomiti Superski Region, accessed under one pass. This offers 1,200+km of slopes to explore, with plenty for every level of skier in your family. Family friendly ski resorts in the Dolomites also provide a wealth of unique and exciting activities for post-ski entertainment, as well as a growing number of luxury family ski chalets in the Dolomites for an unforgettable stay. A family ski holiday to the Dolomites provides fabulous skiing in some of Europe’s most breathtaking mountains, with each resort offering unique experiences and personalities for the perfect getaway.

Family Ski Holidays to Ortisei

The Christmas market in Ortisei at night.

Ortisei is easily one of the best family ski resorts in the Dolomites, suited to skiers of all abilities. With access to the slopes of the Seiser Alm, you have a gorgeous alpine plateau for first timers to build their confidence. In our opinion it’s ones of the best ski resorts for beginners. Additionally, as part of Val Gardena, an area consistently recognised as one of the best for skiing in Italy, you then have a wealth of further options for skiing. From conquering the Legendary 8 slopes of Val Gardena, including the epic World Cup Saslong slope, to connecting directly with the ski areas and ski resorts of the Sellaronda circuit, this is a mountain playground you will never tire of!

As a village, Ortisei is both fashionable and cultural, with a friendly atmosphere that is welcoming to all. Stroll together as a family through the traditional pedestrianised centre and there’s plenty to discover. There’s everything from family friendly cafés to cosy bars and even a Michelin Star restaurant. In fact, Ortisei is home to many of the best restaurants in the Dolomites. You will also find authentic souvenir shops to purchase traditional wood carvings that make lovely keep-sakes. In addition, there are luxury boutiques for those with a taste for the finer things. The resort also boasts the swim and spa complex Mar Dolomit, which offers a fabulous rest day from skiing for the whole family.

Family Ski Holidays to Selva Val Gardena & Santa Cristina

Aerial view over Selva Val Gardena, one of the best ski resorts in the Dolomites for luxury family ski holidays.

Selva is the highest of the three main villages in the Val Gardena region. Sitting directly on the Sellaronda circuit also makes it arguably the best for skiing. A family-friendly resort in the Dolomites, Selva is abundant with fun activities, cool places to visit, and fantastic skiing, which are covered in-depth in our insider’s guide to the resort. Families in particular will love the FunSlope above Selva (accessed via the Risaccia I and II lifts), where children can tackle ski challenges and obstacles.

Among the best things to do with the family is a visit the ice hockey rink in the resort centre. Throughout the winter season, you can enjoy the lively atmosphere as you watch HC Gherdëina take on other teams from the Alps Hockey League. If you plan your luxury family ski holiday in the Dolomites for the late season, you could coincide with the Rock The Dolomites music festival. The final, centrally located village of Val Gardena is Santa Cristina, although due to its close proximity to Selva, the two villages very much go hand in hand. And being just 4km from Ortisei, a family ski holiday in Santa Cristina gives fantastic access to all three villages of the Val Gardena region. This puts it in a prime location for access to the 180km of pistes of Val Gardena. You have a fantastic choice of slopes, from the family-friendly Alpe di Siusi (Seiser Alm) to the slopes of the Sellaronda and ski areas beyond. One of the best things to do for families in Santa Cristina is the Monte Pana snowpark. The snowpark has a children’s fun park, easy beginner slopes, and the adrenaline-inducing Monte Pana zipline. It’s a key highlight of any luxury family ski holiday to the Dolomites.
